LOOKING FOR LANGSTON

Ein Kunst- und Filmprogramm der Kunsthalle Basel im STADTKINO BASEL.

Im Rahmen der Ausstellung The Jawbone Sings Blue von Troy Montes Michie zeigt Screen Dialogs den poetischen Schwarz-Weiss-Film Looking for Langston von Isaac Julien aus dem Jahr 1989. Der Film untersucht die private Welt des Dichters, Autors, und Sozialaktivisten Langston Hughes und anderen Schwarzen Künstler:innen während der Harlem Renaissance. 

Isaac Julien verbindet Archivmaterial, imaginäre, traumhafte Szenen und Poesie zu einem lyrischen und bewegenden Werk, das die Wahrnehmung dieser Epoche hinterfragt und die oft verschwiegenen Erfahrungen Schwarzer queerer Menschen hervorhebt.

As part of the public program for The Jawbone Sings Blue by Troy Montes Michie, Screen Dialogs shows Looking for Langston, a poetic black-and-white film by Isaac Julien from 1989. The film explores the private world of poet, author and social activist Langston Hughes and other Black artists during the Harlem Renaissance. Isaac Julien combines archive material, imaginary, dreamlike scenes and poetry to create a lyrical and moving work that questions perceptions of this era and highlights the often-concealed experiences of Black queer people.
